We’re only six weeks away from our Keeping It Equal event for National Careers Week, and it’s shaping up to be another unique, exciting day for girls in Wales.
We’ve just announced that Keeping It Equal will be held at the Cardiff City Stadium, on Friday March 8th – International Women’s Day (IWD). This special day will see women and organisations around the world celebrating and promoting gender equality to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Did you know that IWD is now an official holiday in over 25 countries, including Afghanistan, Russia, and Uganda? Ours is just one of hundreds of events marking this special day – even celebrities are getting involved, with the likes of Charlotte Church, Fearne Cotton and Tinie Tempah donating their (probably designer and very fab!) old clothes in a massive jumble sale this weekend.
In Cardiff our event will bring together the IWD and National Careers Week themes to support high school girls (Key Stage 3 and 4) to try non-stereotypical careers and activities to raise aspirations and connect girls with their potential. We know that far too few girls consider careers in non-traditional industries, and many are channelled into stereotypical and often limited vocational training, in hairdressing and beauty, for example. We want to give girls a chance to explore their options and see what else is available to them.
Keeping It Equal is being sponsored by Taylor Wimpey and Wilkinson PR, and supported by Cardiff Council, with a range of exciting confirmed providers including Kier Construction, Cardiff and Vale College, the Welsh Football Trust and Cardiff City Football, South Wales Police, Techniquest, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Wales. Girls will hear inspiring presentations from women who are challenging stereotypes, have the opportunity to try their hands at a range of fun activities, from panel beating to football, and will take part in a ‘role model speed dating’ style session. Places are limited and are already selling fast – download the flyer and the booking form to reserve your places today. As a special offer, when you buy five places one person goes free!
It’s not too late for your organisation to mark IWD – get involved with our event as a sponsor, exhibitor or activity provider, or check out what other events are happening in Wales and England. Why not consider hosting your own event to celebrate IWD?
