This weeks guest blog is written by Laura Kemp, a brilliant author from Penarth, South Wales.
Hi Laura! Thank you for writing this guest blog for us, we are so excited to hear your story!
Well to start this blog, I should probably state that I was never one of the brightest.
Never the one getting awards or being picked out for praise.
But what I did have was tenacity and drive: I worked hard and stuck with it until it was done.
I wanted to be able to say I did my best.
And everyone is capable of that – being gifted or having an ability by themselves won’t get you anywhere.
Determination is the dynamite.
I had no idea at school what I wanted to do – nor when I left University.
I did love words though, finding out about tings, so I applied to do a week of work experience at a newspaper. I suddenly felt I’d found my place.
Again I was never the best reporter. Never award-winning. But I was keen and got on. That determination came in very useful.
Fifteen years later, I had a baby and left my job – and then I panicked. What next? I had to do something. So I sent off some ideas to the nationals and started freelancing while my son slept.
I had an idea for a book – ridiculous, right? But nine years later, I’ve had four published books and my fifth and six are in the pipeline.
Again. No awards and I’m not the best author. But I am still the same hard-working school girl inside. Yes, I don’t look it! I’m 42 and ancient. Yet the desire to give my best burns through me just as it did when it came to homework and exams.
In fact, the flame is ever brighter now – it comes from confidence and reaping the awards of having pushed yourself.
There are always doubts – that is a given: you wouldn’t be human if you had total belief.
You’d have no mates either! But I use that voice, my inner critic. I tell her I’ll prove her wrong.
Because you don’t have to be the best – you just have to give your best.
Don’t give up. Believe in yourself.
Everyone of you has that power!
Thank you Laura!
